hold the salad

Q significantly more interesting than Business Law: How many ingredients are necessary before you can rightfully call an assortment of vegetable(s) a salad? Is just lettuce enough? Someone I know claims it's permissible to just have a bowl of lettuce and some dressing and it's officially a salad. Agree or disagree? I mean really, do you see lettuce and think "that could BECOME a salad" or "that IS a salad"?

It has to have a least a few pieces of grated carrots and maybe one or two slices of a radish before it can be called a salad. Otherwise it's just a big bowl of lettuce.

Maybe your friend figures since she puts salad dressing on lettuce it then becomes salad because it's dressed as one.

I vote it's a salad. At least according to my husband--it took me nearly 20 years to get him to eat lettuce (that was iceberg--took a couple more years to convince him to try romaine) with a little ranch or bleu cheese, and I'm calling it good.

oh this drove me nuts on my mish- in Germ., they do consider a salad to be lettuce+ dressing, and each time i thought i was being healthy or whatever, ordering a salad, then this wimpy thing showed up. oohhhh you can bet i was not chipper. i think for something to be called a salad it needs at least three additional ingredients besides the dressing and leaf-ness. I hear we're seeing baby C today- can't wait! Good luck with everything you've got. you'll kick some arsy!

Well Joel made a delish salad last night with just lettuce (an assortment of lettuce mind you) and called it a salad. Sometimes he does that with just spinach.......

But he makes his own dressing, so maybe that doesnt count.

That's weird. You need more than one thing or it's lettuce. Just call it lettuce.

I think its just lettuce, but saying salad is kindof like shorthand for all things lettuce-related, w/o having to explain that you wish you were having a real salad with a variety of tasty mix-ins but are just too tired to do anything more than pour the lettuce out of the bag and wish you'd had the foresight to buy a bagged salad that contained more than just lettuce.
