purge o rama

Hrmm. Tons of preparing-to-move stuff-purging going on. Enormous DI run or last minute yard sale? Please advise.

Wow. If you need the money and can get Erin Summerill the queen of all things yard sale on board to give you advice and help you out then go with the yard sale.

If money is not a problem I'd go for a DI run less stress. Plus you'll still make the run after the yard sale with all the stuff that didn't sell.

Yard Sale, four hours only. Followed by a run to DI.

yard sale. Saturday morning, early. Get your bargaining face on.

it pays for the all the fast food stops on your drive to the new home.

DI. You'll feel good about giving and all that, plus you won't have the hassle of a yard sale. By the way, congrats on everything!

The only reason to have a yard sale is if you're really hoping to make some money off the stuff. Of course, money would be nice - but if your main goal is to get everything out of the way, then DI is the way to go. Yard sales are a pain in the butt to run, anyway since you have the hassle of advertizing, and then you have to sit out there all day while stuff gets picked over. Not to mention you have to watch carefully to make sure people are only taking the stuff you want to sell and not your other stuff. I think DI is the better option, myself.

Craigs List. You can usually get higher prices for furniture by selling it on Craigs List, and people will come pick it up.

Follow by DI run/leave on side of road.

Craigslist is nice. People come pick up your junk with the simple click of a button. Beware of morons. Apparently an ad saying - "Free, you haul it" was somehow unclear and I fielded a lot of emails wondering how much I was selling it for and if I would bring it to their house. Uh, no.

Anyway, if you just want to get rid of stuff, I'm a big fan of setting it on the curb with a sign that says "free." This absolutely mortified my husband the first time I suggested it, but I won by saying, "We'll just leave it out there until we finish cleaning/packing/reorganizing/redecorating and if its still there by the time we are ready to go to DI, we'll haul it away. If someone takes it before then, they just saved us a trip." We haven't taken anything to DI in years. And nothing has lasted longer than 30 mins.

Large stuff on Craigslist first. Then yard sale--put out LARGE directional signs from a main intersection on Friday night, but save the last one or two for 7:30 Saturday morning. Take any leftovers to DI. Make sure you have a roll of quarters and some dollar bills for change, and group stuff by price--do it by 25-cent increments to keep addition and change easy. Good luck!

Hey congrats on your new adventure. That's really exciting. I'm proud you will be a homeowner. Way to step up the ladder of adulthood.

I love yard sales so much, that is always my choice. In fact, if you have a yard sale, I will come. But I agree with ~j, four hours only, then take it to DI.

I'm coming to this a little late, but I'm for the yard sale first, *then* you can chuck @ D.I. any little thing (or big) that didn't sell. We did that a few weeks ago & netted $225 for 4 hrs work.
