and another thing

I'm posting twice in a row, but don't let this new post stop you from reading the serious post below and nodding knowingly.

However, I have been catching up in blogland and was just wondering: What is the deal with cruises? Have you been on one? If so, why? Do you get claustrophobic? What is the difference, if any, between a cruise and a week-long all you can eat buffet with tanning lamps?

I don't know. I just don't know.

The idea of a cruise never, ever appealed to me. I'm claustrophobic and prone to anxiety attacks when I feel trapped. However, when a travel agent friend got us a killer deal on a cruise two years ago and begged me to go, I said what the hell. And it was a blast! It's the best kind of vacation because when you are on the boat, you can actually relax without feeling guilty about missing out on some famous landmark or museum or something. Anyway, I loved it so much I went on a cruise for my honeymoon last year, which I swore I would never do. Also, at the tanning lamp buffet, you aren't getting transported to beautiful places like the Bahamas or St. John.

We went on a cruise for our honeymoon to the Bahamas.

I don't think I need to go on another one for quite a while, at least not on a "Fun Ship."

The rooms are a little claustrophobia-inducing, but you don't spend a lot of time in them.

Not a lot of difference, except ports of call and a cruise staff that looks like they could be vaguely oppressed. In fact, the cruise just kind of upset my bleeding heart. When you go to ports, they want you to go on specific streets through specific roots, all so you don't notice the squalor that surrounds you. You know, the squalor that your dollar is supporting. Also, you might notice in the Bahamas that on one side of your ship is the super-ritzy Atlantis resort with a whole bunch of multi-million dollar homes surrounding it. A channel separates that playground from the city proper, which is dirty, poor, and oh whats that word again? Right. Squalor.

Plus you are on a ship with a thousand of other loud, borish, large Americans who drink all day.

So, you know, IT'S A FUN SHIP!

I've been on 3 ocean cruises and 1 river cruise. I've loved all of them. I think it's just handy to go on them. It's easy to not have to worry about how you're getting from place to place. And there's all that entertainment at night and stuff. I hate trying to entertain myself at night on vacations. I don't drink, so I don't want to go to a bar. Everything's closed, so that makes it difficult. It's just easy.
No claustrophobia. Yeah.

haha. I have never been on a cruise...but I would love to go on one, actually. In Hawaii, it is much cheaper to island-hop on a cruise than to take an airplane from island to island.

Never been on a cruise. I'm not sure how well I would do on one. I think I would get really sea sick. But I would like to go on one to see if I do get sick. The one I really want to go on is up to Alaska to see the icebergs. So I don't know how much of a tanning experience I would have on that one...

Seriously, Azucar ruins everything.

Things I like about cruises:

1. All you can eat
2. Movie theater on the ship
3. Ice cream buffets

and the big reason:

ALL-DAY CAMP FOR THE KID. Should you and your child choose, you NEVER have to see each other until bedtime. I know you still like your kid, but there will come a day when you think "Man, I wish a paid camp counselor would talk to her for hours about Hannah Montana so I can go eat a ridiculous amount of ice cream and then go make out with my husband in the afternoon."

Hrm, cruises have never really appealed to me. If the point is to veg out and sit in the sun, I think I'd prefer the beach. If the point is to see 6 countries in 7 days (for 3 hours each) I'm not interested.

I do ruin everything.

And maybe it would be more fun if I had kids to bring.

And maybe if I'd been on a nicer cruise line.

I'd like to try one of those cruises that is NOT a floating hotel. Like the ones that take 100 of you all around the Mediterranean into little tiny ports the big ships can't get into.
